Government Health Warning?

'Should Governments come with their own 'Government Health Warning?'

Fear of Politicians: Understanding Politicophobia

Do you feel anxious when politicians appear on television or radio? If so, you might be experiencing a phobia known as Politicophobia—an intense fear of politicians or political situations.

People suffering from Politicophobia may experience symptoms like shortness of breath, shaking, panic attacks, rapid heart rate, dizziness, or even a strong urge to avoid voting or engaging with politics altogether.

If you find yourself struggling with Politicophobia, there are several steps you can take to manage your anxiety:

  • Evaluate your media consumption: News broadcasts can often be sensationalised, biased, or filled with distressing content. Consider reducing your exposure to political news and focus on managing your reactions instead of avoiding the subject entirely.

  • Explore Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): CBT is a proven method for addressing phobias. It can gradually help you face your fear by exposing you to images and discussions about politics in a controlled, supportive environment, allowing you to desensitise over time.

  • Practice relaxation techniques: Apps focused on relaxation, meditation, Hypnosis or deep breathing can be great tools to lower your anxiety. Mindfulness practices can also help you stay calm and centred during times when politics trigger stress.

Seeking guidance from a therapist who specialises in anxiety or phobias can provide additional support in overcoming Politicophobia. Taking these steps can help you regain control and live a more balanced life, free from the fear of political figures or events.
