Understanding Fear Tactics: How Politicians Exploit Our Deep Desire for Safety and Belonging

Fear is a powerful tool in politics, capable of shaping public opinion in profound ways. Politicians have long understood that tapping into our innate desire for safety and belonging can be a highly effective strategy. By leveraging fear, they can:

  • Suppress voter turnout

  • Steer voters away from political opposition

  • Gain support for specific candidates or parties

  • Tap into our deep-seated need for security

  • Make their messages twice as impactful as those without fear

The process is often subtle but incredibly effective. Politicians first work to establish a belief about a particular issue. Once this belief is in place, they stir up fear around that issue, encouraging people to align with them as the solution. The logic is simple: if you’re scared, you’ll naturally gravitate toward those who seem best equipped to protect you.

We often hear terms like "Right-Wing Racist" or "Left-Wing Fascist" thrown around in political discourse. These labels aren’t just careless rhetoric; they are deliberate strategies designed to exploit our fears and create division. Unfortunately, we’ve seen the consequences of these tactics in recent times, particularly in the UK, where political fearmongering has led to increased social unrest.

It's disheartening to witness political parties using fear to manipulate voters and sow discord within the population. However, understanding these tactics is the first step toward resisting them. If you find yourself feeling anxious or fearful because of political rhetoric, remember that you now have the tools to recognise these strategies for what they are—calculated attempts to sway your opinion through fear.

By staying informed and critically evaluating the messages we receive, we can make more reasoned decisions and avoid being manipulated by fear-driven tactics.

Together we stand divided we fall.
