What's in a name?

Why Our Names Matter and the Impact of Pronouns

Names are more than just labels—they're deeply tied to our identity, carrying the essence of who we are. From birth, our names become a fundamental part of our social identity, shaping how others see us and how we view ourselves. They reflect our cultural heritage, family values, and individuality, providing us with a sense of belonging and continuity in a constantly changing world.

Pronouns, while essential for respectful communication, can sometimes obscure the unique power of our names. When people rely solely on pronouns, it can unintentionally depersonalise interactions, replacing our individual identity with broad categories. This can be especially impactful in spaces where names are important for establishing connection and respect.

Using a person’s name thoughtfully shows recognition and appreciation for who they are. By remembering and using someone’s name, we acknowledge their unique story and personhood, reinforcing positive, individualised connections. Pronouns serve a functional purpose, but names carry personal significance—grounding us in our identities and reminding us, and others, of our inherent value.
